There’s always more to someone’s story than a plaque on a wall can tell us. Memory Anchor makes it possible to learn the stories of thousands of memorialized individuals. I designed a robust backend for cemeteries to manage thousands of burial records & a user facing app for cemetery visitors to interact with these stories.

Memory Anchor had an app for cemetery visitors to find and explore memorialized individuals’ stories. The experience wasn’t intuitive and didn’t do the intention of remembrance any justice.

They also had a desktop web app for cemeteries to manage records and publish tours to the app, but it suffered from a disjointed user experience and required training to be used.

Cemetery managers were struggling with the software, to the point that often Memory Anchor would have to step in and demo it to new users. We re-designed the whole flow, from site creation to uploading records and finally plotting said records onto the land. The whole process now has visible steps for users to walk through, and provides the necessary information to complete more complex steps.

One of the more complex tasks cemetery managers face is creating walkable paths by plotting these onto the map. These paths are necessary to create tours where visitors can follow paths and learn about notable memorialized individuals. The new experience provides clear instructions and intuitive controls which are accessible through keyboard shortcuts.
